Mini-review:

I had so much fun watching this! I feel like the movie's tonal shifts and mixtures might be a bit too jarring for some people, but they worked perfectly for me. Most of the comedy lands pretty well, and the dramatic moments strike a nerve. There are even some effective jump-scares here and there! But the thing that takes the film to the next level is the acting. Greg Hsu and Austin Lin deliver flawless performances that really draw you in. People expecting a full-on gay romance will be disappointed, cause that's not what the story is about at all, but the chemistry between these two actors is fantastic and energetic. The directing is also dynamic and keeps you on the edge of your seat. That being said, the movie is not perfect. It tends to represent gay people in a way that feels somewhat stereotypical, and I think it could have delved much more into the social issues it addresses. I know the film has the best of intentions, but yeah, it could still be better in that regard. Anyway, Marry My Dead Body is a very fun experience, filled with humor, drama, action and great performances.

Yikes. Like, the age difference is a bit disconcerting as it is, but that’s r*pe. And the kid was apparently 16, not 17. That’s not a relationship.

He was also given a seven month suspended sentence in May of this year for for filming and sharing intimate videos of a minor between 2018 and 2019.

I don’t think I’ll be watching this show, and it’s really quite disgusting that he’s being included in the QL genre.

i wish we knew more abt mrs yishmir, but at the same time i Like that shes free real estate because then it's headcanon central. i headcanon that aaron and his wife actually met each other during an nsb operation and she quickly figured out aaron was No Ordinary Doctor very quickly. i also hc that, much the same way aaron basically adopted luke as pseudo-son at first sight, mrs yishmir will also be unable to resist the sheer "this young man needs all the pseudo-parental figures he can get" energy wafting off of nsb-era!luke.

aaron brings luke over his home one day for dinner and mrs yishmir (who i gave a headcanon first name of Angie in my fic "excuse me, sir, i am this agent's emotional support babysitter", idk why she just strikes me as an Angie) just sees this on-the-cusp-of-18 sullen miserable looking boy mumbling an apology for crashing dinnertime even if angie was the one who told aaron to bring him over (shes heard a Lot about luke from aaron and she wanted to get to know the kid!!) and she just yknow

Hurray for the Riff Riff Bring New Album to Sold-Out Music Hall of Williamsburg

Hurray for the Riff Raff – Music Hall of Williamsburg – March 5, 2024

“It’s so good to be home.” That was Alynda Segarra beaming in front of a sold-out Music Hall of Williamsburg on Tuesday night, the Bronx native and band Hurray for the Riff Raff feeling right at home in Brooklyn wearing matching black vests and big smiles. With a brand-new album — The Past Is Still Alive — out for barely a week and already gaining critical acclaim, the set leaned heavily on the new material, opening, as the record does, with “Alibi,” Segarra with one foot in personal folk, the other planted in fuzzy rock — one in a sandal, one in a black boot. “Buffalo” showed off deft songwriting skills, the rhythmic singing and catchy chorus underpinned by the evocative, dreamlike lyrics.

The songs were beefed up by the backing band: slide guitar on that “Buffalo” adding atmospherics, a propulsive beat from drummer Yan Westerlund on “Hawkmoon” driving a straight rocker, and Nnamdï (who opened the show) coaxing a groove with his urgent bass playing on “Rhododendron,” off the 2022 LP Life on Earth. Segarra’s voice was the centerpiece, delivering one captivating lyric after another: lines like “I know that it’s dangerous, but I wanna see you undress / Wrap you up in the bomb shelter of my feather bed” in “Colossus of Roads.”

Saxophonist Lynn Ligammari joined the band midway through, turning “Snake Plant (The Past Is Still Alive)” Springsteen-esque as Segarra belted out the refrain, “Nothing will stop me now,” the crowd believing every word. Hurray for the Riff Raff also played selections from older releases, including the rawer bluesy energy of “Good Time Blues (An Outlaw’s Lament)” and Ligammari adding mournful soul to the weighty “The Body Electric,” which Segarra said “started it all” for the musician. The set ended with “Ogallala,” the band building to a triumphant swell, Segarra singing, “To watch the world burn / With a tear in my eye,” everyone in the room feeling right at home. —A.
